Every moment passes, whether we like it or not.
What matters is what we choose to do with those moments.
Have you ever caught yourself thinking:
“Is it 5:00 p.m. yet? I hate my job.”
Or perhaps:
“I wish she would stop talking about the same problem again.”
These thoughts may appear insignificant, but they reveal something important about how we are experiencing our lives.
Sometimes the conversation is with another person.
Sometimes it is an ongoing monologue within ourselves.
Either way, our thoughts can reveal whether we are fully present in our lives or simply waiting for another hour, day or season to pass.
Are You Living or Simply Moving Through the Day?
We often hear the phrase life is precious.
It may feel so familiar that we no longer stop to consider its true meaning.
Then something happens.
We hear about the death of a loved one, a friend, an acquaintance or someone whose story touches us.
For a brief moment, everything may become still.
We remember that life is not endless.
We recognize that time matters.
We may even promise ourselves that we will live differently.
And then life continues.
Responsibilities return.
Schedules fill.
Old habits take over.
Before long, we may find ourselves operating on autopilot again.
When Life Feels Like a Difficult Hand of Cards
There may be periods when life feels unfair.
You may feel as though you have been dealt a difficult hand filled with uncertainty, disappointment, struggle and challenging circumstances.
When you are living through those experiences, it can be difficult to see beyond them.
You may begin believing that struggle is simply how life is supposed to feel.
You tolerate situations that drain you.
You repeat patterns that no longer serve you.
You carry emotional pain because confronting it feels harder than continuing to live with it.
But avoiding what hurts does not necessarily make the pain disappear.
Sometimes it simply becomes part of the background of your life.
Living Fully Can Require Courage
Life is not only precious.
It can also require courage.
It takes courage to acknowledge when something is not working.
It takes courage to look honestly at the choices you are making.
It takes courage to question the beliefs, habits and circumstances you have accepted for years.
And it takes courage to do the inner work required to change them.
Facing the difficult cards you have been dealt may not be comfortable.
But carrying unresolved pain indefinitely has a cost too.
The relief, clarity and freedom that can come from understanding yourself more deeply may ultimately be far more rewarding than continuing to hold tightly to what is hurting you.
How Are You Spending Your Moments?
Consider how you move through an ordinary day.
How much of it are you wishing away?
How often are you waiting for work to finish, the weekend to arrive, a difficult conversation to end or circumstances to finally become different?
How much time are you spending mentally somewhere other than where you actually are?
Hours quietly become days.
Days become years.
And the question becomes:
Is this really how you want to spend the moments that make up your life?
You do not need to dramatically change everything overnight.
But you can begin by becoming more aware.
Notice your thoughts.
Notice what drains you.
Notice what brings you alive.
Notice where you are repeatedly compromising yourself.
Notice what you keep telling yourself you will change one day.
Because your life is not happening someday.
It is happening now.
I invite you to explore working with me if you are ready to reflect more deeply on where you are, what may be keeping you stuck and how you want to move forward.
The moments will continue to pass. The question is: how do you want to live them?
