Power struggles are everywhere.

They are visible in politics, institutions, workplaces, relationships and communities. We see people competing for control, defending their positions and treating disagreement as a contest that must produce a winner and a loser.

But external conflict can also invite a more personal question:

What power struggles are happening within you?

Where are you fighting against yourself?

And how might the win-or-lose thinking you observe in the world be reflected in your own inner dialogue?

Notice the influence of other people’s judgement

It can be easy to allow other people’s opinions to shape your direction.

You may question your choices because a parent, partner, colleague or community expects something different. You may silence your needs to avoid disapproval or continue living according to standards that no longer feel right.

Finding your balance can be difficult, particularly during periods of uncertainty and social tension.

A stronger inner foundation begins when you understand what you believe, why you believe it and whether those beliefs still support the person you are becoming.

Examine what you inherited

None of us begins life with a completely independent set of values.

As children, we absorb messages from our parents, schools, cultures, religions, communities and wider environment. These influences can offer wisdom, stability and belonging.

They can also pass on fear, prejudice, unrealistic expectations or the belief that love and approval must be earned.

The goal is not to reject everything you were taught.

It is to examine it consciously.

Ask yourself:

Which values genuinely feel like mine?

Which beliefs were shaped by fear or the need for approval?

Where do I still seek permission to be myself?

What expectations am I carrying that no longer fit my life?

What would I choose if I trusted myself more deeply?

This process can help you separate useful guidance from conditioning that limits your growth.

Build rather than simply rebel

Creating your own foundation is not about opposing everything that came before you.

Rebellion can still leave your decisions controlled by the people or systems you are resisting.

A solid foundation is built more deliberately.

It includes values you have considered, boundaries you are willing to maintain and beliefs that reflect both your experience and the way you want to live.

It may be grounded in honesty, compassion, responsibility, freedom, loyalty, creativity or service.

The exact values are personal.

What matters is whether your choices consistently reflect them.

Strengthen your relationship with yourself

Self-love is not simply a feeling of confidence or positivity.

It includes respecting your needs, recognising your limitations and refusing to abandon yourself for acceptance.

It also means taking responsibility when your behaviour does not reflect your values.

Building this relationship can be courageous work, particularly if your early experiences taught you that love was conditional.

You may need to challenge old beliefs, grieve what you did not receive and practise making decisions without constant external reassurance.

This does not happen instantly.

A foundation becomes strong through repeated choices.

Live from alignment, not performance

A life of fulfilment, passion and purpose is not created by reaching a permanent state of certainty.

It develops when your actions become more closely aligned with what matters to you.

You may still experience doubt.

Other people may still disagree with you.

The world may continue displaying conflict, competition and division.

But a stronger internal foundation can help you respond without losing your direction.

Perhaps you recognise that your current foundation feels unstable, inherited or dependent on other people’s approval.

That recognition is not failure.

It is the beginning of rebuilding.

What belief, expectation or judgement are you ready to examine?

And what value do you want to place at the centre of your life?
